Repository material of surface textures and geochemistry of clinopyroxene grains of coastal dune sands, Mexico

This work shows how pyroxene grains preserve their surface textures and morphology during their source-to-sink history in coastal dune sands in the Gulf of Mexico Coastal Plain (GMCP). Our study applies to clinopyroxene grains concentrated in coastal dune sands derived from the Trans Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB) rocks exposed under a coastal area with moderate chemical weathering. Geochemical analysis, surface texture imagery, and compactness measurements indicate low compactness values for augite and diopside grains, potentially controlled by their cleavage property which fractures clinopyroxene during sedimentary cycles. Mechanical surface textures are inherited as flat cleavage surfaces and bulbous edges. The former is generated by the intense fluvial transport and grain-to-grain collisions in the intertidal zone, whereas bulbous edges develop during aeolian transport. Mechanical/chemical surface textures are preserved as elongated depressions associated with bulbous edged, smoothed over by silica precipitation. Chemical surface textures are sparse and are represented as mamillated textures imprinted on the clinopyroxene surfaces, suggesting dissolved action under subaqueous conditions. Due to their cleavage fragility, moderate chemical weathering control on the grains, and intense mobility during their source-to-sink history, little preservation of chemical surface textures on clinopyroxenes is achieved. Clinopyroxene grains retain primarily fluvial transport signals during their transport onto the coastal dune sands. This study shows how surface textures and morphology of pyroxene grains are used to determine their transport and deposition episodes in coastal dune sands exposed near volcanic source rocks. However, their cleavage property may obscure some surface textures produced during clinopyroxene sedimentary cycles.
