Model configuration

The model configuration uses version 2.3.01 of the source code, the 2000 dbar reference level for the potential density (sigma-2), and an equation of state for the seawater of 17 terms. The horizontal domain covers the Gulf of Mexico, the northwestern Caribbean Sea and part of the western North Atlantic Ocean ([98°W, 77°W] × (18°N, 32°N]), with a 1/25° (∼3.8-4.2 km) of horizontal resolution, and 41 hybrid vertical layers, which are mainly isopycnal layers in the open ocean below the mixed layer and z-layers above it. The model bathymetry integrates different sources: the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO), corrected with proprietary data from Petroleos Mexicanos (PEMEX), observations collected during several cruises, and bathymetric data from a 1/25° HYCOM simulation. The simulations have monthly open boundary conditions derived from a monthly climatology produced by 22 years (1994–2015) of the global experiment GLBb0.08-GOFS 3.1 with data assimilation and CFSR for the atmospheric forcing. For the initialization and relaxation conditions, the GDEM4 monthly climatology is used. A hot-start of January 1994 from the global experiment GLBb0.08 53.X is used. A spin-up was carried out, and the model was run not constrained by data assimilation (free-running) for 22 years (1994-2015) with no tidal forcing. Two experiments were simulated.

Experiments

The first experiment, called OBNoW-25 (expt_01.4), is an idealized experiment with no atmospheric forcing.

The second experiment, called OBW-25 (expt_03.0), was run with atmospheric forcing derived from hourly fields of the CFSR reanalysis for the period 1994-2015.

Data description

The instant outputs of both experiments were recorded every day in .[ab] format, which can be converted to NetCDF format using standard HYCOM tools. The outputs cover the 1995-2015 period and are grouped for separated years.

Utilities

The grid and the bathymetry files are available in the topo folder.

The folder UTILITIES contain scripts to read and write the bathymetry and grid, as well as scripts to extract physical variables.
